Weaving words: Sami - Norwegian

Some of the words used in connection with branch weaving are of Old Norse origin. The words used in Kåfjord today are mostly Sami and are an important part of the branch tradition.

  • Ávil/ávilatn= swells in branch tissue
  • Ávildanárpu = hoof thread
  • Ávil(dan)muorra, - soabbi = hoof tree/staff as the hooves/ávilat lies around
  • Ávildit = to swell/to make will
  • Azzil/azzilat = two pins to set ávilsoabbi on
  • Bállu = the bottom section of the branch
  • Básmi = a certain number of threads tied around each stone
  • Beallji = side support of the branch crank (caggi)
  • Bumma = bombs (rivja)
  • Caggi = side support of the branch crank (beallji)
  • Ceahkki = notch, at the top of the side support where the boom is
  • Časkkáhagat = the warp pieces that remain after weaving
  • Čatnat = To bind
  • Čoavdit ránu = pick up the seam that attaches the branch to the boom
  • Čuohppat gaskat = to cut off the groove
  • Čuoldit = to divide the gutter into two parts (every other)
  • Čuočča/čuožžamat = gutter(s)
  • Čuoččabumma = the boom to the top edge of the gate (várfi)
  • Čuoččanođđu = skein with twine
  • Dáidneláigi =the weft yarn in the pattern field in the loom
  • Dáidni = pattern field in the weave (stáhpi)
  • Diehppi = tassel at the end of the várfi
  • Fiehtti = number of threads tied to each stone
  • Gálgat mohkiid = grasping the warp threads with your fingers
  • Gierrinárpu = finger crochet divider thread
  • Gierrinbáddi = The hemp from which the cane that holds the divider in the gutter hangs
  • Gierrinmuorra, - soabbi = cane that holds the divider in the gutter
  • Yellows = to braid/finger crochet thread across the warp.
  • Gođa = features in branches
  • Gođđinmuorat = loom
  • Gođđit = to weave
  • Hearvarátnu = branches in bright colours
  • Hearvastáhpi =pattern board (dáidni) with coloured yarn
  • Juohkit = dividing the gutter/separating
  • Juohku = a divide in the gutter
  • Kihtegat = chain table (pattern)
  • Láigebinná = short piece of yarn
  • List = wide stripe at the top and bottom of the branch
  • Loahpageahči = pattern stripe at the bottom of the crotch
  • Mohkki = bend in the cleaning wire, bottom
  • Muorat = the bottom feathers on the racing chair
  • Neidit ránu = Taking down the loom
  • Niikun = shingle
  • Niikunii coggat = To thread the needle
  • Niisasoabbi = main tree (ávilsoabbi)
  • Niertuhagat = the warp pieces that remain after weaving (časkkáhagat)
  • Nođđudit = sneezing
  • Ravda = side
  • Ráhkadit várffi = to embrace the thread to várfi and three in the weave (niikun)
  • Ránuholbi = yoke edge, branch side edge
  • Ránusuohppun = to drain the branch
  • Rátnoálgu = jar edge at the top of the branch (várfebaddi)
  • Rátnobállu = the bottom of the branch
  • Rátnočuožžamat = boundary ring
  • Rátnogeađgi = branch stone, stone at the bottom of the trench
  • Rátnogoarrunárpu = thread for sewing várfi to the boom
  • Rátnogođa = weft yarn in the branch weave
  • Rátnosoappit = swollen tree/avilsoabbi and the log that holds the divider in the gutter (gierrinsoabbi)
  • Rátnomuorat, -stuolet, -veavva = branch tissue
  • Rátnu = branch
  • Rivja = bomb (bumma)
  • Rivjaárpu = cod yarn thread as várfi years sewn to the boom with
  • Rivjanávli, -soabbi = stick used to roll on the boom
  • Rivjet bajás = Rolling on the boom
  • Ruvvet = rubbing back and forth over the weave to make it even.
  • Sallut = to embrace the purge wire
  • Sáhpánbánit = name on pattern; small hosiery teeth
  • Skielgá = cross-eyed: when one or more pattern stripes are incorrectly woven
  • Stáhpeláigi = weft yarn for the pattern strips
  • Stáhpi = pattern strip
  • Stáinnatbánit = name on pattern; small hosiery teeth
  • Suohppunmuorat, -stuolet = deckchair
  • Suohppunsoabbi = cleaning swab
  • Suohpput = Running the loom
  • Uddet = to make a doll out of the weft yarn
  • Uddu = dock of weft yarn
  • Várfi = the top edge of the branch, woven on the branch fabric
  • Várfebáddi = jar edge at the top of the branch (várfi, rátnoálgu)
  • Várfediehppi, -geahči = tassel at the end of the várfi
  • Várfeláigi = yarn as várfi woven by
  • Vuođđoláigi = the main yarn in grena
  • Vuođđu = bottom field in the branch (bállu)
