Inger Ellen Baal is a proud Sámi woman from Kåfjord in Troms, known for her commitment to Sámi culture and rights. She grew up on the plateau in a lavvo with her parents and four siblings, where the family lived from reindeer herding. When the Guolášjohka power plant was built more than 50 years ago, they lost their grazing land, leading to the loss of their traditional livelihood.
Although Inger Ellen never learned to read or write, she has been an invaluable asset to the local community. She has helped preserve and pass on Sami language and culture, and her knowledge has been a great inspiration to new generations.
In 2022, the documentary film Eallin, directed by Ørjan Marakatt Bertelsen, made about her life. The film depicts her strong connection to nature and her deep longing for the lost life in the mountains, and offers a warm and down-to-earth portrait of a woman who has dedicated her life to preserving Sámi culture.
