The day also has the name&nbsp;<em>Day of the Sami people&nbsp;<\/em>and S<em>amish folk day<\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sami National Day \/ S\u00e1mi \u00e1lbmotbeaivi is celebrated in commemoration of the first Sami National Assembly, which took place in Trondheim on 6 February 1917. For the first time, Sami people from all over S\u00e1pmi met to work for common Sami issues across borders. One of the initiators of the meeting was the freedom fighter\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nordligefolk.no\/en\/elsa-laula-renberg\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1217\">Elsa Laula Renberg<\/a>. She wanted the Sami to co-operate across national borders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>When we stand alone, we can accomplish little or nothing. However, we have a common interest and must unite and become a force.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Elsa Laula Renberg<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The Sami National Day was adopted at the Sami Conference in 1992 and was celebrated for the first time in 1993.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Sami flag<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>The Sami flag is an important symbol for the celebration of the Sami National Day. The flag is made by the Sami artist&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/no.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Astrid_B%C3%A5hl\">Astrid B\u00e5hl<\/a>&nbsp;from Skibotn in North Troms, and was approved at the 13th Nordic Sami Conference in 1986. The motif on the flag is from the rune boom and the poem \u00abBeaivvi b\u00e1rtnit\u00bb written by the South S\u00e1mi&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/no.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anders_Fjellner\">Anders Fjellner<\/a>. In the poem, the Sami are portrayed as the son of the sun and the daughter of the moon. The text is a poem by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/nbl.snl.no\/Isak_Saba\">Isak Saba<\/a>, which was written and published in Sagai Muittal\u00e6gja in 1906. Arne S\u00f8rli has set the poem to music.
