{"id":1441,"date":"2023-11-06T18:30:00","date_gmt":"2023-11-06T18:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nordligefolk.no\/?p=1441"},"modified":"2025-11-06T18:47:21","modified_gmt":"2025-11-06T18:47:21","slug":"eahparas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nordligefolk.no\/en\/eahparas\/","title":{"rendered":"Eahp\u00e1ra\u0161"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Eahp\u00e1ra\u0161 is the spirit of a dead, newborn child longing for peace.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are outdoors and hear crying or shouting that sounds like a newborn baby, you may be witnessing an eahp\u00e1ra\u0161 (called in Norwegian&nbsp;<em>changeling<\/em>), and you find yourself near a place where a newborn, unbaptised child lies buried.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In former times, it sometimes happened that children were abandoned in nature to die, or that murdered children, or children who died in other ways, were buried in nature. It was often women who had given birth in secret, and in despair took their own lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The S\u00e1mi spirit manifests itself by shouting, and in some cases can also appear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the child to find peace, it had to be baptised. There were special baptismal formulas for this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ole A. Thommassen wrote the following about the eahp\u00e1ra\u0161 (The Lappish Relationship, 1999):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>If children are murdered in secret \u2013 about the 'eahp\u00e1\u010d\u010daid' \u2013 there is a superstition that sooner or later after the murder, they begin to cry with the voice of a newborn baby when one happens to come near a place where such a murdered child lies buried. For some, it is said to appear as a small naked child.
