Food traditions in North Troms are influenced by three cultures that have merged; Sami, Kven and Norwegian. The Sea Sami were permanent residents and lived from fishing and small-scale farming, but the culture has also been influenced by migrant Sami who had summer grazing here.

In Skibotn, Storfjord, was one of the most important markets in Northern Norway, Ivgobađamárkan / Skibotn Market. The market was a natural meeting place for people from inland and coastal areas.

Fjærabuene in Birtavarre
North of Birtavarre there are several shoreline arches lined up along the seashore. Eight of these are examples of Sea Sami building techniques from the 19th century. The huts were used to store seafaring tools and fishing equipment, but were too small to house the boats.

The combination of animal husbandry and fishing characterised the Sea Sami areas for hundreds of years. The families were self-sufficient in what nature had to offer from the sea, the land and the countryside.

Skárfvaggi / Skardalen is a small Sea Sami village in Kåfjord. In 2009, the village was selected as a national cultural landscape in agriculture.

Range / Goahti
A gamme is an earthen hut built from tree trunks and covered with earth and/or peat. In some places in northern Troms, gammes were used as dwellings, barns and boathouses right up until the Second World War.

Life in Kjerringdalen before 1940
In the summer of 1936, Jan Güettler, (1917 - 1944), and his film expedition hiked from the mountains of Lapland to the coast of the Arctic Ocean. They made film recordings that later became the short film «Nordanfärd». This journey brought Güttler to Kjerringdalen for the first time.

Evacuation gamma in Gárdegohppi
In 2014, 70 years after it was burnt down and evacuated, the hamlet that housed around 40 people and some animals was rebuilt in Gárdegohppi, Skardalen.
