Settlement on Årøya
Årøya lies in the Lyngenfjord. The island has probably been inhabited or visited since the Iron Age. On the island there are several foundation walls and remains of earlier settlements.

In Lyngen, the Germans realised that, geographically speaking, the area is the first natural defence barrier where it is possible to defend against a military attack from the east. The area has long fjords and high mountains.

Elen in Storvik
In Elen's home, the door was always open and the coffee was ready. She married Peder Jensen, Per-Jensa, in Storvik. The marriage remained childless until one day they were asked to take in a foster child. Then another, and another, and another. Elen welcomed 18 children, both into her home and into her heart.

Helena - hard-working crafts veteran
Helena learnt to weave at an early age and continued to weave day and night. She was widowed at an early age, and branch weaving became the lifeline for her and her children. She wove her way to a gold badge of honour as a handicraft veteran.

Hanna Rivertz - a cultural centrepiece
Hanna grew up on the sheriff's farm Karnes on a model farm with agriculture, a mill, a stamping mill, a cloth press, a lime works and a nursing home for the insane.

Sister Helene - municipal disinfector
Helene Suleng, Sister Helene, worked as a parish nurse, and later as a public health nurse in the large municipality of Lyngen (Storfjord, Kåfjord and Lyngen) in the period 1921-1949. She braved storms and bad weather to care for the sick or receive newborns. Her good humour and ability to communicate with everyone made her much appreciated. Helene received the King's Medal of Merit for her work in 1959.

Big Aletta - indispensable in its time
She slaughtered animals, rowed fish, sewed, braided, traded, organised, healed and acted as a midwife. Alette Pedersen in Olderdalen, also known as Stor-Aletta, has been described as an indispensable woman in her time.

Anne Marie - A woman of the sea
At the age of 13, she began her career as a fisherman and has since devoted her entire life to fishing. Anne Marie Eriksen from Olderfjord in Kvænangen rowed an open boat and braved wind and weather, summer and winter. She trained many a youngster in the fishing profession.
